Milk Marketing Board facts for kids
The Milk Marketing Board was a special group created by the British government. Its main job was to help dairy farmers in England and Wales.
Imagine all the milk produced by thousands of farms! The Board bought all of this milk from farmers. Then, it made sure the milk was sent to places where it could be processed and sold to people. This system helped small farmers get a fair price for their milk. It stopped big farms from selling their milk much cheaper and making it hard for smaller farms to compete.
How the Milk Marketing Board Started
The Milk Marketing Board was first created in 1933. It was set up to bring order and fairness to the milk industry after some tough economic times.
- In 1933 and 1934, three similar boards were also created for Scotland.
- Later, in 1955, another board was set up for Northern Ireland.
These boards worked to make sure milk production and sales were stable and fair across the United Kingdom.
The Milk Race
From 1958 onwards, the Milk Marketing Board became well-known for sponsoring a famous bicycle race. This race was called "The Milk Race" and was part of the Tour of Britain. Sponsoring means they paid money to help organize and promote the event. This helped to advertise milk and the dairy industry to the public. The Milk Marketing Board continued to sponsor "The Milk Race" until it was eventually closed down.
