Milk Tray is a famous brand of chocolates made by Cadbury. It is known for its different types of chocolates all in one box. Cadbury UK first launched Milk Tray in 1915. This makes it one of their oldest and most popular chocolate brands.

You can find Milk Tray in many countries around the world. These include Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, New York City, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. The name 'Tray' comes from how the chocolates were first sold. They were packed in big boxes and arranged on trays. Customers could then buy them loosely from these trays.

The look of the Milk Tray box has changed often over the years. The types of chocolates inside have also been updated. This is to keep up with what people like to eat. Today, it is still one of the most popular boxes of chocolates in the UK. More than 8 million boxes are sold every year.

A Look Back: Milk Tray's History

In 1916, Cadbury introduced a smaller box for Milk Tray. It had a purple background and gold writing. This design has been updated a little over the last 100 years. By the mid-1930s, Cadbury's Milk Tray was selling more than any other box of chocolates. It has stayed a top choice in the UK ever since.

Chocolates We Miss: Discontinued Varieties

Over the years, some chocolates have been removed from the Milk Tray box. This happens to make space for new flavors.

  • Exotic Delight: This was a milk chocolate with a Turkish delight jelly filling. It was removed in 2015.
  • Toffee Charm: A chewy toffee covered in milk chocolate. It was later changed into the "Salted Caramel Charm."
  • Nutty Heart: This chocolate had a soft caramel center with a whole hazelnut. It was changed to the "Truffle Heart."
  • Lime Cordial: Also known as "the wee barrel" because of its shape. This flavor is no longer available.

The Famous Milk Tray Man

From 1968 to 2003, and again since 2016, Milk Tray has been advertised by the 'Milk Tray Man'. He is a tough, James Bond-style character. He goes on exciting adventures to secretly deliver a box of Milk Tray chocolates to a lady. His famous saying was: And all because the lady loves Milk Tray.

Many actors have played the Milk Tray Man. Gary Myers was in 11 commercials between 1968 and 1984. James Coombes took over the role in 1987 and again in 2016. Stuntman Alf Joint performed a famous scene where the Milk Tray Man jumped from a cliff into the sea. Alf Joint also did stunts for Sean Connery in the James Bond film Goldfinger. Martin Grace, who was Roger Moore's stunt double in James Bond movies, also did stunts for Milk Tray ads. He once leaped from a bridge onto a speeding train!

The music for the adverts is called The Night Rider. It was written by Cliff Adams. These TV advertisements have been very popular. In 2005, the whole campaign was ranked number 11 on ITV's "Best Ads Ever" list.
