Millbridge, Plymouth facts for kids
Millbridge is a small area, like a neighborhood, located in Plymouth, England. It sits right where the old towns of Plymouth and Devonport used to meet. Millbridge is in the county of Devon.
This area was once a village on its own, but now it's part of the bigger city of Plymouth. Millbridge is north of an old toll bridge that was built way back in 1525 by Sir Piers Edgcumbe. This bridge crossed a waterway called the Deadlake or Stonehouse Creek. Millbridge is also west of Pennycomequick, south of Stoke village, and east of Stoke Church.
What's in a Name? The Millbridge Story
Millbridge got its name from that old toll bridge. Right next to the bridge, there used to be a naval saw mill. The bridge and the mill were located across the creek, between Eldad Hill and Molesworth Road. For a long time, this was the main way to travel between Plymouth and Devonport.
How the Creek Became a Park
The part of the creek to the east of the bridge was filled in during the late 1890s. Workers used materials from quarries in Cattedown and Oreston to do this. The new land created became a public space called Victoria Park. This park officially opened in 1903, giving people a nice green area to enjoy.
From Waterway to Rugby Pitches
The rest of the creek, west of Millbridge, was also filled in later. By 1972, the entire area had been turned into rugby pitches. These fields are often used by students from Devonport High School for Boys and by the Old Boys RFC, which is a rugby club for former students.
