Miller, Oklahoma facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Miller is a small place in the southwestern part of Pushmataha County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Miller is about 10 miles northwest of a town called Antlers and a little bit west of Moyers.

How Miller Got Its Name

Miller was named after Dr. J.H. Miller Sr., who was a rancher from the nearby town of Antlers. A rancher is someone who owns and manages a large farm, usually for raising cattle. A United States Post Office was opened in Miller on June 22, 1905. It stayed open for many years until October 31, 1954.

From Warren's Store to Miller

Before it was called Miller, the community had a different name: Warren’s Store. This name came from the very first business there, a store run by Major W.J. Warren. He was a veteran from the Confederate Army and an important person in the area during the time when Oklahoma was still known as Indian Territory. As Dr. Miller's cattle ranching became a big part of the area, people slowly started calling the place Miller, and the name stuck.

Miller's Location and Landscape

Miller is located in a place called the southern Impson Valley. It sits at the bottom of a hill known as Long Mountain, which is to its west. A stream called Ten Mile Creek starts on Long Mountain. This creek and other smaller streams flow through the valley, making the land very good for raising cattle.

Miller's History in Indian Territory

Before Oklahoma became a state, Miller was part of the Choctaw Nation. This was a large area of land belonging to the Choctaw people. Miller was specifically located in a part of the Choctaw Nation called Jack’s Fork County. The main town for this county, called Many Springs, was located north of Miller. Today, Many Springs is known as Daisy.

Roads and Old Landmarks

Miller is located where two roads meet: Miller-Jumbo Road and M&M Road. Miller-Jumbo Road connects to a place called Jumbo to the north and to Oklahoma State Highway 3 to the south. M&M Road connects Miller to Moyers in the east. In the past, there were some important buildings in Miller. One was the old Campton general store, which used to be on the northwest corner but is now gone. Another was the old Miller school, which burned down. A community center was built in its place on the southwest corner.
