Millers Ferry is a small, unincorporated community in Wilcox County, Alabama, United States. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. A large structure called the Millers Ferry Lock and Dam is located very close to the community. It sits right on the Alabama River.
A Look Back in Time
In 1884, a special school called the Miller's Ferry Normal and Industrial School was started in Millers Ferry. It was a private boarding school. This school helped African American students get an education. They could live there while they learned.
The 2007 Tornado
On March 1, 2007, a very powerful tornado hit Millers Ferry. This tornado was rated as an EF4, which means it caused a lot of damage. Sadly, one person died, and two others were hurt. Over 70 homes in the community were either damaged or completely destroyed. The tornado caused more than $2 million in damage to the area.
