A Look at Millersville's Past

Millersville got its name from George Miller, who was the very first Postmaster here. The first Post Office opened on July 24, 1841. This was an important stop along the Annapolis & Elkridge Railroad, often called the A & E.

The A & E railroad was completed in 1840. It was one of the earliest train lines in the United States! This railway connected Annapolis with another big railroad line, the Washington Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

Today, Millersville is mostly a suburban area, meaning it has many homes and neighborhoods. However, you can still find parts of the original historic village. The Childs Residence, a special old house, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It's now a key spot along a new bike trail that goes right through the historic part of town.
