Millicent B. Shelton (born January 29, 1966) is a talented American director who has worked on famous music videos, television shows, and movies. She is known for her creative vision and for breaking new ground in the entertainment industry.

Shelton made history by becoming the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for directing a comedy series.

Early Life and Education

Millicent Shelton was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a dedicated student and attended two very famous schools. She is an alumna of Princeton University and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied to become a director.

Career as a Director

Starting in Film

Shelton began her career in 1989 working on the famous Spike Lee movie Do the Right Thing. Her first job was as a wardrobe production assistant. This role involved helping to organize and manage all the clothes and costumes the actors wore in the film. It was a great way to learn how movies are made from the inside.

Directing Music Videos

In the 1990s, Shelton became a popular director for music videos. She worked with some of the biggest stars in music. She directed videos for artists like Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly, Aaliyah, CeCe Peniston, and the hip-hop group Salt-n-Pepa. Her videos helped shape the look and feel of music in that decade.

Success in TV and Movies

After her success with music videos, Shelton directed her own movie called Ride, which was released in 1998.

She then moved into television, where she has directed episodes for many popular shows. Some of the shows she has worked on include:
