Rhiannon Afua "Rhian" Benson, born on January 10, 1977, in Accra, Ghana, is a talented singer and songwriter. She is known for her soulful and jazz music. Rhian is both Ghanaian and British.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Rhian was born in Ghana. Her mother was a singer from Wales, and her father was a guitarist from the Ashanti people. She has a younger sister and a brother. Rhian grew up in different places, including Ghana, India, and the United Kingdom. She eventually settled in the UK.

From a young age, Rhian loved music. She learned to play the piano and guitar. She also enjoyed writing songs and poems. Before becoming a full-time musician, she studied economics at a university in London. She even worked at an investment bank for a while.

Music Career

When Rhian returned to the UK, she started performing in small music clubs in London. A record label from Los Angeles, DKG Music, discovered her. Rhian then moved to Los Angeles, California, to record her first album.

First Album: Gold Coast

Her first album, called Gold Coast, was released in October 2003. Rhian wrote all the songs on the album herself. She created the music using her guitar and keyboards. She also helped produce the album with Bob Power and James Poyser.

Awards and Second Album

In 2005, Rhian Benson won a Mobo Award. This is a special award for music of Black origin.

With help from two producers from Denmark, Jonas Rendbo and Daniel Fridell, Rhian released her second album. This album, named Hands Clean, came out on February 14, 2011. The album showed a new side of her music, mixing soul with electronic sounds. It featured songs about love, loss, and life. The first song released from this album was "Better Without You" in February 2011.
