Rhian Benson grew up in different countries. She was born in Accra, Ghana. Her mother was a singer from Wales, and her father was a guitarist from the Ashanti group. Rhian has a younger sister and a brother.

Her family moved around a lot. She lived in Ghana and India. Later, she settled in the United Kingdom, her mother's home country. Rhian started playing piano and guitar when she was young. She also enjoyed writing songs and poetry.
Her Path Before Music
Before becoming a full-time musician, Rhian studied at the London School of Economics. She earned a degree in a subject called econometrics, which uses math in economics. She also studied economics through a program at Harvard Extension School. However, she could not finish this program because her mother became ill. After her studies, Rhian worked at an investment bank.

Making Her First Album
Rhian moved to Los Angeles, California, to record her first album. It was called Gold Coast and came out in October 2003. She wrote all the songs on this album herself. She also helped produce it with Bob Power and James Poyser.
Awards and New Sounds
In 2005, Rhian Benson won a Mobo Award. This is a big award for music of Black origin. She released her second album, Hands Clean, on February 14, 2011. She worked with Jonas Rendbo and Daniel Fridell from Denmark on this album. Hands Clean showed a new side of her music. It blended soulful singing with electronic sounds. The songs on the album told stories about love, loss, and life. The first song released from this album was "Better Without You" in February 2011.
