The Milo Public Library is a special building in Milo, Maine. You can find it at 121 Main Street. This library is in a small, unique building. It was built with help from a famous person named Andrew Carnegie. Because of its history and design, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it is an important historical place.

About the Library Building

The Milo Public Library sits on a triangle-shaped piece of land. It is in the main part of Milo village. Streets like Park Street and Pleasant Street are nearby. The Milo Town Hall is also close by.

The library is a small, rectangular building. It is made of brick and has a tall foundation. The roof is a special style called a gable-on-hip roof. The front of the building faces west. It has windows that slide up and down. The main entrance is on the right side. It has a rounded arch over the door. A fanlight, which is a semicircular window, sits above the door. You walk up concrete steps to get inside.

The lower part of the building is called the basement. It is separated from the main floor by a brick line. Smaller windows in the basement let in light. Inside, the main desk and office are at the south end. The rest of the space is a reading room filled with shelves. There is also another reading room downstairs in the basement.

A Library's Journey

The very first library in Milo started in 1902. It was a "traveling library." This means books were moved around to different places. Local members of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) organized it. At first, the books were kept in someone's home.

In 1909, the library moved. It found a new home in the local Odd Fellows hall. At this time, the WCTU Public Library Association was created. This group worked hard to get money for a proper library building.

In 1921, they received a big grant. It was $10,000 from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Andrew Carnegie was a very rich businessman. He helped build many libraries across the country. The town of Milo agreed to provide the land for the library. They also promised to pay for its upkeep.

The library building was finished in 1922. It was based on a standard plan for Carnegie libraries. However, it was changed a bit. An architect from Bangor, Maine named Frank A. Paterson designed these changes.
