Milton was a small town that used to exist in Brown County, Illinois, in the United States. It was planned and started on August 25, 1836.
The Story of Milton, Illinois
Milton was created by two men named Lewis Gay and William C. Ralls. They were the owners and planners of this new town. They decided to set up Milton near a place called McKee's Creek, about five miles from the Illinois River.
Why Milton Didn't Last
When Lewis Gay and William C. Ralls were trying to sell land in Milton, they advertised it as a great spot. They said it was located where boats could easily travel on the water. This was important for trade and getting goods around in those days.
However, even with these plans, the town of Milton did not succeed. It ended up being a "failure," meaning it never grew into a proper, lasting settlement. Today, Milton is considered a ghost town because it no longer exists as a populated place.
