Milton Green Sublette (born around 1801, died 1837) was a brave American frontiersman. He was a trapper, fur trader, and explorer who became known as a "mountain man." Milton was one of five Sublette brothers who were important in the fur trade in the American West. His brothers included William, Andrew, and Solomon. Milton helped start the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. This company was formed to take over the business from his brother William, Jedediah S. Smith, and Dave E. Jackson.
Who Was Milton Sublette?
Milton Sublette was an American frontiersman. This means he explored and lived in the wild, unsettled parts of the American West. He was also a trapper, catching animals for their fur. Fur trading was a big business back then. He was known as a "mountain man" because he spent so much time in the mountains.
A Tough Injury
In 1826, Milton Sublette hurt his leg during a battle. The injury was serious and did not heal well. It kept getting infected, which means it became very sick. In 1835, a doctor in St. Louis had to remove his leg. After that, Milton used a special "cork leg" to help him walk.
Even with his new leg, Milton kept exploring. He even rode in a special wagon pulled by a mule. Sadly, his leg continued to have problems. Later infections led to his death in 1837. He passed away at Fort John, which is now in Wyoming.
A Lost Grave
Years later, in 1843, Milton's brother Solomon placed a grave marker for him. This marker was put at Fort John where Milton was buried. However, today, no one knows exactly where Milton's grave is. The United States Military built a building over the old graveyard at Fort William.
The Thunderbolt of the Rockies
Milton Sublette was known for being a very lively person. He was said to have a strong and exciting personality. People called him "the Thunderbolt of the Rockies." This nickname showed how quick and bold he was in his actions and words.
