Mimi Pond's Career and Awards

Mimi Pond spent many years, especially in the 1980s and 1990s, writing for television shows and magazines. She also created cartoons and comic strips for these.

She worked briefly on The Simpsons, writing the very first full episode, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" in 1989. This episode was even nominated for two Emmy awards! Mimi Pond mostly works as a cartoonist and illustrator. She got her first big chance drawing weekly cartoons for Spectator Magazine. In the 1980s, she also created art for famous publications like National Lampoon, The Village Voice, and The New York Times.

Mimi Pond has written and drawn five funny books. Today, she writes for the Los Angeles Times. She won the PEN Center USA award for her amazing work in graphic literature. This award specially mentioned her 2014 graphic novel, Over Easy. She also won an Inkpot Award in 2014 at the San Diego Comic-Con, right after Over Easy came out.

Pond has written for TV shows like Designing Women and Pee-Wee's Playhouse. She also drew cartoons for the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers. From the 1980s to the 1990s, she drew a full-page comic for Seventeen magazine.

Her book Shoes Never Lie led the Boston Globe newspaper to call her a top expert on how women feel about shoes.

Her Graphic Memoirs

Mimi Pond has written two graphic memoirs. A graphic memoir is like a comic book that tells a true story about someone's life. Her two memoirs are called Over Easy and The Customer is Always Wrong. These two books are based on her own life and tell one big story together. They are mostly about her time working as a waitress in Oakland while trying to become a full-time artist.

Over Easy Story

Pond worked on Over Easy for more than 15 years. The idea came from her time as a waitress in an Oakland, California restaurant in the 1970s. Over Easy is a story about growing up. It follows a young character named Margaret Pond as she works at the Imperial Café. This diner in the late 1970s was full of interesting people, like hippies and punks. At the diner, Margaret starts to become 'Madge' and gets her first look at what adulthood is like. Over Easy captures what Oakland was like in the 1970s in a funny, slightly made-up story based on Pond's experiences. Many newspapers and journals, like USA Today and NPR, praised this memoir.

The Customer Is Always Wrong Story

In 2017, Pond released her second graphic memoir. It continues the story from Over Easy. Madge is still working at the busy Imperial Café in Oakland. She is still surrounded by unique people at the restaurant and still dreams of becoming an artist. In The Customer Is Always Wrong, Madge finally decides to save enough money to leave the West Coast. She plans to go East to New York to follow her art dreams full-time. This second book has a more serious feel than the first part of the story. It was well-liked by fans and groups like PEN America and Entertainment Weekly.

Mimi Pond is married to Wayne White, who is also a cartoonist and artist. They have two children, Woodrow and Lulu White, who are both artists too.
