Mimosa is a small, quiet community in Lincoln County, Tennessee, United States. It's not a big city, but a place where people live without a formal city government. It was started a long time ago, in the early 1800s. You can find it north-northeast of the city of Fayetteville. Before 1898, it had a very unusual name: "Bucksnort"! Later, it was renamed Mimosa.
The Story of Mimosa
Long ago, when it was called Bucksnort, it was a busy farming area. We know a lot about this time from a book called "The Scamps of Bucksnort" by Lily Mae Pamplin.
How Bucksnort Got Its Name
The name "Bucksnort" came from a man named William Pamplin. He was known for making loud, snorting sounds. People would often say, "Just listen to Buck snort!" This happened so often that neighbors started calling the place "Bucksnort."
When the community needed a post office, the government asked for a name. Since William still lived there and kept making his loud sounds, the people decided to officially call it Bucksnort. The government approved, and that's how the first post office and the area around it became known as Bucksnort.
Other Bucksnort Towns
The name "Bucksnort" was also used for other towns and communities. This was common before the Civil War. Deer hunters knew the sound of a "buck snort," which is a noise a deer makes. You could find places called Bucksnort in many parts of Tennessee, and also in Alabama and Mississippi.
The Post Office
Mimosa had its own post office for a short time. It opened in 1887 and closed in 1902.
