About Minetta Good

Minetta Good was born in 1895 in New York City. She went to art schools like Cooper Union and the New York School of Applied Design for Women. She also studied at the Art Students League of New York. There, she learned from famous artists like Robert Henri.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Minetta lived in New Jersey. She won many awards for her art. One prize was for the best landscape painting in 1932. She also helped start a group called the Salons of America. Her art was shown in many places across the United States.

Art During the Great Depression

During the Great Depression, many people struggled to find work. The government started programs to help. Minetta Good worked for the Federal Art Project. This program hired artists to create public art.

She painted two large murals for post offices. One mural was in Dresden, Tennessee. It was called "Retrospection" (1938). This painting showed scenes from the early days of the county. You can still see it in the original post office building today.

Minetta also created five murals for the post office in St. Martinville, Louisiana. One of these murals was moved to a new post office. The original building had four round ceiling decorations. They showed local plants and animals like magnolias, azaleas, crawfish, and pelicans. There was also a bigger painting of Evangeline under an oak tree. It showed the Bayou Teche with colorful water hyacinths. A Catholic church was in the background.
