The Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard is an important leader in the Canadian government. This person is in charge of looking after Canada's fishing industry. They also manage all the waterways in the country. This includes rivers, lakes, and oceans.

The Minister also oversees the Canadian Coast Guard. This group helps keep our waters safe and clean. They are also responsible for the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation. This is a company that helps sell fish caught in freshwater. The Minister leads the government's marine department, called Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

How the Minister's Job Started

Early Days of Marine and Fisheries

The job of looking after Canada's waters and fish started way back in 1867. This was when Canada first became a country. Back then, it was called the Minister of Marine and Fisheries. This person was responsible for both shipping and fishing.

In 1930, this big job was split into two smaller ones. One person became the Minister of Fisheries. Their job was just about fish. The other responsibilities, like shipping, went to a new Minister of Marine. A few years later, the Minister of Marine job joined with the Minister of Transport.

Changes Over the Years

The Minister of Fisheries job lasted until 1969. Then, it was combined with forestry. This new role was called the Minister of Fisheries and Forestry. But this only lasted for two years.

In 1971, the fisheries job became a side role. The person who was Minister of the Environment also handled fisheries. Later, in 1974, a special helper was named for fisheries. This person was called the Minister of State (Fisheries).

In 1976, the two jobs were combined again. It became the Minister of Fisheries and Environment.

The Modern Role

The job as we know it today started in 1979. It was named the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Since then, the name has changed a few times. But the main idea of the job has stayed the same.

An important moment happened in 2015. Hunter Tootoo became the first Indigenous person to hold this position. He served from November 2015 to May 2016. The current Minister is Diane Lebouthillier. She started her role on July 26, 2023.
