The Ministry of the Interior and Public Security (in Spanish: Ministerio del Interior y Seguridad Pública) is a very important government office in Chile. It's like the main office for "home affairs," which means it helps keep things safe and organized inside the country. Its job is to make sure there is public order, safety, and peace for everyone in Chile.

This Ministry also helps the President of Chile by planning, guiding, and checking on the country's internal policies. It's also in charge of local governments and oversees all the regional leaders who are not elected by the people.

Since September 6, 2022, Carolina Tohá has been the Minister of the Interior and Public Security. Her team includes Manuel Monsalve, who is the Undersecretary of the Interior, Francisca Perales, the Undersecretary of Regional Development, and Eduardo Vergara, the Undersecretary of Crime Prevention.

If the President of Chile is away or unable to do their job, the Minister of the Interior steps in as an acting president. This is sometimes called "vice president," but it's not a separate job. It just means the Minister takes over the President's duties for a short time. This system has been in place since 1833.

History of the Ministry

Early Days of the Ministry

When Chile was first fighting for its independence, the main "secretary" of the government group, called a Junta, acted as the Secretary of Government. The Ministry officially started on October 27, 1812. Back then, it was one of two main "secretariats" (like government departments) created by the rules approved that day. It was first called the Secretariat of the Interior. However, in 1814, after a battle called the Battle of Rancagua, the Spanish rulers took control again and closed this office.

Re-establishment and Name Changes

After Chile became independent in 1818, the Ministry was brought back. It was first named the "Ministry of Government" (from 1817–1818). Later, it was renamed the "Ministry of the Interior and Foreign Affairs" (from 1829–1871). During this time, it also handled matters that are now part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The foreign affairs part became its own separate ministry in 1871.

Over its long history, this Ministry has changed its name several times as its responsibilities shifted:

  • Ministry of Government (1817–1818)
  • Ministry of Government and Foreign Affairs (1818–1829)
  • Ministry of the Interior and Foreign Affairs (1829–1871)
  • Ministry of the Interior (1871–2011)
  • Ministry of the Interior and Public Security (2011–present)
