Francisco Antonio Pinto y Díaz de la Puente (born July 23, 1785 – died July 18, 1858) was an important Chilean politician. He served as President of Chile from 1827 to 1829.

Early Life and Education

Francisco Antonio Pinto was born in Santiago. His parents were Joaquín Pinto and Mercedes Díaz de la Puente. He went to the Convictorio Carolino, which was the best school in Chile at that time. After school, he studied law at the Real Universidad de San Felipe. He became a lawyer on October 11, 1808.

In his younger years, Pinto worked in trade. He also joined the military as an officer in the "Regimiento del Rey" (King's regiment). In 1810, he was in Lima when he heard that a new government was forming in Chile. He quickly returned home.

Diplomatic Missions

Pinto was given important jobs as a diplomat.

  • He went to Buenos Aires to help the independence movement.
  • After that, he traveled to England and other European countries. His mission was to get support for Chile's fight for freedom from Spain.

While in Europe, he learned that the Chilean army had been defeated. Spain had taken control of Chile again. So, he went back to Argentina to help create a new army.

Pinto's Family

Francisco Pinto married Luisa Garmendia Aldurralde. They had two children:

  • Aníbal Pinto: He later became a President of Chile, just like his father.
  • Enriqueta Pinto: She married Manuel Bulnes, who also became a President of Chile.

Pinto's grandnephew, Ignacio Carrera Pinto, became a hero in the War of the Pacific.

Political Career

In 1820, Francisco Pinto finally returned to Chile. Bernardo O'Higgins, a key leader, sent him to Peru. There, Pinto helped Peru gain its independence.

In 1824, he became the Minister of Government and Foreign Affairs. This meant he was in charge of Chile's internal affairs and its relationships with other countries. In 1825, he became the leader of the Coquimbo region.

Becoming President

In 1827, the President, Agustín Eyzaguirre, resigned. Ramón Freire was then elected president, and General Pinto became the Vice President. When General Freire also resigned on May 5, 1827, General Pinto took over as "Accidental President." This means he became president because the elected president left office.

As president, he helped write the new Constitution of 1828. This was an important document for Chile's future.

The 1829 Election and Civil War

A new presidential election was held in May 1829. General Pinto won clearly. He was officially announced as president on October 19. However, a big problem started, leading to the Chilean Civil War of 1829.

The problem was about the vice-presidential election. The person who should have won was a conservative. But the Congress, which was controlled by liberals, chose Joaquín Vicuña as vice president. He was the brother of the Senate president and had fewer votes. This made the conservatives very angry, and they started a rebellion.

Pinto resigned from the presidency on November 2, 1829, less than two weeks after he was officially named president. This event marked his leaving public life for a while. Francisco Ramón Vicuña, the President of Congress, took over his powers.

Return to Public Life

Pinto returned to public life in 1841 as a congressman. The Liberal party wanted him to run for president in the 1841 Chilean presidential election. He would have run against his son-in-law, General Manuel Bulnes. However, Pinto did not actively campaign, and General Bulnes was elected.

Even so, Pinto was elected as a deputy for La Serena. On May 30, 1843, he became the president of the Chamber of Deputies. In 1846, he was elected as a senator. He also became a member of a special committee for war and navy matters. President Bulnes also named him to the Privy Council, which advised the president.

In 1846, a botanist named Claude Gay named a genus of flowering plants from Chile Pintoa after Francisco Antonio Pinto. These plants belong to the Zygophyllaceae family.

On July 5, 1847, Pinto was elected president of the Senate. He was reelected as a senator in 1855. Francisco Antonio Pinto died in Santiago on July 18, 1858, at the age of 72. He passed away before his term as senator ended.
