Minni Katharina Nurme (born October 30, 1917, died November 22, 1994) was an important Estonian writer and poet. She was born in Aidu Parish (now part of Viljandi Parish) and later passed away in Tallinn. Minni Nurme wrote many novels, short stories, and poetry collections throughout her life.

Minni Nurme's Life and Writing Journey

Minni Nurme was born Minni Neumann. She finished school at a girls' school in Viljandi in 1936. During World War II, she lived in areas controlled by the Soviet Union. After the war, she moved to Tallinn and worked as a writer who was not tied to one specific employer. This means she wrote books and poems on her own.

Her first novel, Kentaurid (which means The Centaurs), came out in 1939. Two years later, in 1941, she published another novel called Ratastool (The Wheelchair). During the war, she started focusing more on poetry. In 1945, she released her first book of poems, Sünnimuld (Mother Earth).

After her second poetry book, there was a ten-year break before her third one. This was mainly because of difficulties she faced from the authorities during the time of Stalin's rule. Minni Nurme also worked as a translator, changing books and poems from Finnish and English into Estonian.

Family Life

Minni Nurme had an older sister named Salme Ekbaum, who was also a poet. In 1936, Minni married Jan Raudsepp, and for a few years, she was known as Minni Raudsepp. They divorced in 1941.

Later in 1941, she married another writer, Aadu Hint. They had five children together: three sons and two daughters. Their marriage ended in 1958. One of their daughters, Eeva Park, also became a well-known writer later on. Eeva Park's 1993 novel Tolm ja Tuul tells the story of her parents' marriage ending.
