Minerva Josefina Tavárez Mirabal (born August 31, 1956), often called Minou, is a smart and important person from the Dominican Republic. She is a philologist, which means she studies languages and words. She is also a professor and a politician.
Minou Tavárez Mirabal was a representative (called a "deputy") for the National District in the Dominican Republic's government. She served in this role for three terms, from 2002 to 2016. Before that, she was a deputy minister of foreign affairs from 1996 to 2000. This means she helped her country with its relationships with other countries.
In 2016, she ran for president of the Dominican Republic. She was the candidate for two political parties, the Alliance for Democracy and Democratic Choice.
Minou Tavárez Mirabal has also worked with a group called Parliamentarians for Global Action. This group brings together lawmakers from different countries to work on important global issues. She led their International Council from 2012 to 2014. She also served as President of their Executive Board until 2016.
Since 2019, she has been the vice president of the Alianza País political party. She also helped start and now directs the Memory Museum Mirabal Sisters. This museum remembers her brave family. She is also part of the Leaders Network for Michelle Bachelet's Foundation Horizonte Ciudadano.
In June 2020, Minou Tavárez Mirabal was chosen to join the Board of Directors for the Trust Fund for Victims. This fund helps people who have been hurt by serious crimes that are judged by the International Criminal Court. In December 2021, she was chosen again for a second three-year term on the Board. She was also elected to be the Chairperson (leader) of the Board from 2021 to 2024.

Minou's Early Life and Family
Minou Tavárez Mirabal's parents were Manuel Aurelio Tavárez Justo and María Argentina Minerva Mirabal. They were both lawyers and activists in the Dominican Republic. In 1960, they started a secret group called "14 June." This group wanted to remove the dictator Rafael Trujillo from power.
Sadly, Minou's mother and two aunts were killed by the dictatorship in 1960. Her father was also killed in 1963 by a group that took over the government. Minou was only 7 years old when she became an orphan. Her parents are remembered as heroes for their country. Her aunt, Dedé Mirabal, raised Minou and her cousins. Minou is also the cousin and foster sister of Jaime David Fernández Mirabal, who used to be the vice-president of the Dominican Republic.
Minou's Work in Government
Minou Tavárez Mirabal was elected as a Representative to the National Congress. She served from 2002 to 2006, and then was re-elected for two more terms, until 2016. During her time in Congress, she was the leader of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. This committee deals with how the Dominican Republic works with other countries. She was also a member of several other important committees.
Helping with International Relations
From 1996 to 2000, Minou was the Vice-Chancellor of the Dominican Republic. In this role, she helped organize many important meetings with leaders from other countries. For example, she helped coordinate the first meeting of leaders from the Caribbean Community in 1998. She also helped organize the second meeting of leaders from African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries in 1999.
From 1996 to 1998, she also helped lead a special group that worked on relations between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Before becoming Vice-Chancellor, she helped lead discussions about foreign policy in 1997-1998. She also organized a special meeting of leaders from Central American countries in 1997.
Minou's Political Parties
Minou Tavárez Mirabal was a member of the Party of Dominican Liberation from 1997 to 2014. In 2015, she started her own political party called Democratic Choice. She led this party since it began in 2015. As mentioned, she was the presidential candidate for this party and the Alliance for Democracy in the 2016 election. Since 2019, she has been the vice president of the Alianza País party.
