Minshull Street Crown Court is an important building in Manchester, England. It is a place where serious court cases are heard. This building is very special because it is a Grade II* listed building. This means it is a historic building that needs to be protected.

Minshull Street Crown Court is one of two main Crown Courts in Manchester. The other one is called Manchester Crown Court (Crown Square).

History of the Building

The first stone for the building was put in place on 10 July 1868. This was done by the mayor of Manchester at the time.

The building was designed by a famous architect named Thomas Worthington. It was finished in December 1871.

Building Style and Design

The court building is made in a special style called Gothic Revival. This style looks a bit like old castles or churches. It has a big tower on one corner. There is also a tall chimney that looks like a bell tower.

The building is made of red bricks and has stone decorations. Its roofs are steep and covered with slate. You can also see many animal carvings on the building. These were made by artists named Earp and Hobbs.

Worthington used some ideas from his other designs for this building. He had also designed parts of Manchester Town Hall and Ellen Wilkinson High School.

Changes Over Time

For a while, the Minshull Street building was going to close. This was after new courts opened at Crown Square in 1961. But then, more court cases needed to be heard.

So, in the early 1990s, the Minshull Street building was reopened. It was updated and made more modern between 1993 and 1996.

During this time, the old courtyard was covered with a glass roof. A new part was also added to the building. After these changes, the Minshull Street building had 12 courtrooms inside.
