Early Life and Musical Journey
Mira Zakai was born in Jerusalem as Mira Koigen. Her parents were George and Eva Koigen. She started her studies at the Tel Aviv University. At first, she studied humanities, which are subjects like history and literature. Later, she decided to follow her passion for music. She joined the Rubin Academy of Music and finished her studies there in 1976. Mira Zakai married Jacob Zakai, and they had two daughters.
A Star on the World Stage
Mira Zakai performed with many of the world's best orchestras. She sang with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israeli Opera many times. She also performed with famous groups like the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. She worked with well-known conductors such as Zubin Mehta and Georg Solti.
One special performance was with the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin. They sang for Pope John Paul II at Castel Gandolfo. She had also performed at Menuhin's festival before, singing in Bach's Mass in B minor.
Award-Winning Recordings
Mira Zakai made many recordings that are still enjoyed today. Her recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 with Georg Solti was very special. It won a Grammy Award in 1982 for Best Overall Classical Recording. This is a huge honor in the music world!
She also recorded many other important works. These included "Boris Gudonov" and "War and Peace" with Rostropovich. She recorded "Moses and Ahron" with Solti and the Chicago Symphony. She even recorded songs by poets who sadly died in the Holocaust.
International Opera Debut
Mira Zakai gave many solo concerts, called Lieder Recitals, in major cities around the world. These included New York, Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin. She also made her first international opera appearance in Glasgow, Scotland. She sang the role of Orfeo in Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice. She even shared the role with the famous singer Dame Janet Baker. Mira Zakai played many different characters in operas, from Prince Orlovsky to Ulrica.
Honoring Israeli Music
Mira Zakai was deeply committed to Israeli music. She received several awards for her special contributions. The Composers and Playwrights Association gave her an award for her work. In 1990, she won the Arts and Culture Council prize for her excellent performances of Israeli songs. For Israel's 50th anniversary, she received a special award from the Minister of Culture and Education. This award recognized her dedication and inspiration in performing modern Israeli music.
Sharing Her Knowledge
In 1997, Mira Zakai began a new chapter in her career. She became a professor at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University. There, she taught students how to sing. She also taught them about performing Oratorio (large musical works for choir and orchestra) and Lied (German art songs). She helped many young singers develop their talents.
