The Mirador del Obispado (which means Bishop’s Lookout) is a famous spot in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. It sits high up on the Cerro del Obispado (Bishop’s Hill). This lookout is special because it has one of Mexico's largest monumental flags, called a bandera monumental. The hill and the lookout get their name from an old building, the Palacio del Obispado (Bishop’s Palace), built there in the late 1700s.
This amazing lookout is 775 meters (about 2,542 feet) above sea level. It has a big round area, 40 meters (about 131 feet) wide, with the giant flagpole right in the middle. You can find benches to rest, a small parking area for people with disabilities, and three beautiful French gardens. There are also restrooms and water fountains. It's a perfect place for families to walk and enjoy the views. The main path is wide and well-lit. Cars can drive through, but the main parking lot is at the park's entrance.
Mexico's Giant Flag: The Bandera Monumental
The huge monumental flag at the Mirador del Obispado was first raised on February 24, 2005. This date is important because it's Mexican Flag Day! At that time, it was the biggest flag in the country. Today, it is the second largest, with an even bigger one in Piedras Negras, Coahuila.
This flag is truly massive! Its flagpole weighs 120 metric tons (about 264,555 pounds) and stands 100.6 meters (about 330 feet) tall. The flag itself measures 50 by 28.6 meters (about 164 by 94 feet) and weighs 230 kilograms (about 507 pounds). That's double the size of many other monumental flags! Because of its impressive size, the lookout is a popular place for both tourists and local families.
Special events are held here on important days. These include Flag Day, Independence Day, and Army Day. Sometimes, these celebrations feature cool light shows, fireworks, and fun performances. You might see regional dances, musical festivals, or even concerts!
