Who is Miranda?

Miranda is a young girl, about 15 years old. She is very innocent and hasn't seen many people besides her father. This is because she and Prospero were forced to leave their home when she was only three years old. Her uncle, Antonio, wanted to take over Prospero's position as Duke. So, he sent them away on a small boat, and they ended up on a deserted island.

Life on the Island

For twelve years, Miranda grew up on the island with only her father, Prospero, and his spirit helpers. One of these helpers is a magical spirit named Ariel. Prospero, who is a powerful magician, taught Miranda everything she knows. She learned about the world from him and from the books he brought with him. She had never seen any other human besides her father and Caliban, a strange creature who also lives on the island.

Miranda's Story in The Tempest

The play begins when Prospero uses his magic to create a big storm, or "tempest." This storm causes a ship to crash near their island. On board the ship are the very people who wronged Prospero years ago, including his brother Antonio.

Among the shipwrecked people is a young prince named Ferdinand. Prospero plans for Miranda and Ferdinand to meet. He uses his magic to make sure they fall in love right away. Miranda is amazed to see Ferdinand, as he is the first young man she has ever met. She quickly falls in love with him, and he falls in love with her too.

Prospero tests Ferdinand to make sure he is worthy of Miranda. After some challenges, Ferdinand proves his love and good character. In the end, Miranda and Ferdinand plan to get married. This marriage helps bring peace and forgiveness between Prospero and his enemies. Miranda's innocence and pure heart are very important to the story.
