What Mirandesa Cows Look Like

Mirandesa cattle have a unique appearance that helps them stand out.

  • Nose and Muzzle: Below their eyes, their head is short and wide. They have a very short, black muzzle (nose area) with a clear white fringe of hair above it.
  • Neck: Their neck is short and thick, especially in bulls. It often has a "hook" shape.

Body and Build

  • Body Shape: Mirandesa cattle have a round body. Their shoulders (called 'withers') are low.
  • Back and Rump: Their back is straight, sometimes with a red or white stripe of hair. Their rump (the back part) is rounded.
  • Tail: They have a short tail that is usually held high and is well-covered with hair.
  • Legs: Their legs are short and slender below the knee and hock (the joint in the hind leg). Their hind legs are straight, but their front knees might bend slightly inwards.

  • Personality: These animals are known for being lively but also very calm and easy to handle. They are large and have a compact, strong build.

Where Mirandesa Cattle Live

You can find the Mirandesa breed almost entirely in the northeastern part of Portugal. Specifically, they are mostly found in the Bragança District. This region's environment helps shape the unique qualities of these cattle.
