Mirko Hrgović (born on February 5, 1979) is a former professional football player. He is now a football manager, working as an assistant coach for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. He played as a left winger during his career.

Playing for Clubs

Mirko Hrgović played for many different football clubs during his career. He played in several countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Japan, Germany, and Croatia.

Early Career and Bosnian Clubs

Hrgović started his career playing for Posušje and Široki Brijeg in the top league of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also played for clubs in Japan, like Gamba Osaka and JEF United Chiba.

Playing in Germany and Croatia

He played for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany's top league, the Bundesliga. Later, he joined two big rival clubs in Croatia: Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb.

Time at Dinamo Zagreb

In July 2008, Hrgović signed a three-year contract with Dinamo Zagreb. This move caused some strong feelings among fans of both Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb. Fans of Hajduk felt he had betrayed their club. Some Dinamo fans were also upset because of a past disagreement.

Moving to Greuther Fürth

In July 2009, Hrgović signed a two-year contract with Greuther Fürth, a team in Germany's second division. However, he left the club in November 2009.

Returning to Široki Brijeg

After leaving Greuther Fürth, Hrgović went back to his old club, Široki Brijeg, in March 2010. He continued his playing career there.

Playing for His Country

Even though Mirko Hrgović was born in Croatia, he chose to play for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. He made this decision after feeling that his performances were not noticed in Croatia. He became a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina while playing for Široki Brijeg.

First Appearances

He was first called to play for the national team by coach Blaž Slišković. Hrgović played his first game for Bosnia and Herzegovina in February 2003. It was a friendly match against Wales. He played a total of 29 games for his country and scored 2 goals.

Later International Games

Hrgović played regularly when Blaž Slišković was the coach. After Slišković left in 2006, he also played under coaches Fuad Muzurović and Meho Kodro. When Miroslav Blažević became the coach, Hrgović was not called up for some games. However, he was later brought back for the last two games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Estonia and Spain. His last game for the national team was in October 2009 against Spain.

Becoming a Coach

After he stopped playing football, Mirko Hrgović became a coach. He has worked as an assistant coach for several teams.

He was an assistant coach at Široki Brijeg, Sheriff Tiraspol, Beijing Guoan, and Šibenik.

Current Role

In May 2024, Hrgović was named an assistant coach for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. He works alongside the head coach, Sergej Barbarez.
