Mirko Novosel was a famous Croatian basketball coach and player. He was born on June 30, 1938, and passed away on July 20, 2023.

He coached many amazing players, including legends like Krešimir Ćosić and Dražen Petrović. Mirko Novosel was so good that he was added to two special halls of fame for basketball coaches. He joined the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. Then, in 2010, he was also inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame.

Mirko Novosel also played basketball himself. He played for a club called Lokomotiva Zagreb. His playing career lasted from 1952 to 1966.

Mirko Novosel's Coaching Career

Mirko Novosel became a coach and led the Cibona team to many victories. His team won the Yugoslav League twice. They also won the Yugoslav Cup seven times.

He led Cibona to win the top European club championship, the European Champions Cup. They won this prestigious title two times in a row, in 1985 and 1986. Because of his great success, he was named the European Coach of the Year in 1985.

Coaching National Teams

Mirko Novosel also coached national basketball teams. He was the head coach for the senior men's Yugoslav national team. Under his guidance, the team won several important medals.

  • He led them to a silver medal at the 1974 FIBA World Championship.
  • They also won a silver medal at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics.
  • The team earned a bronze medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

Later, Novosel became the head coach of the senior men's Croatia national team. He led them to a bronze medal at the 1993 European Championship.
