Early Life and Family
Mirza Ibrahimov was born on October 15, 1911, in a village called Eyvaq. This village is located in a region of Iran today. When he was about seven years old, in 1918, he moved with his father to Baku, which is the capital city of Azerbaijan. His family came from a group of people known as the Beyish or Bayish tribe.
A Champion for the Azerbaijani Language
Mirza Ibrahimov played a big role in protecting the Azerbaijani language. From 1954 to 1958, he was the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet in Azerbaijan. This was a very important government position.
During this time, he strongly believed that Azerbaijani should be an official language, alongside Russian. He even traveled to Moscow to talk to the Chairman of the USSR Supreme Soviet about his idea. The Chairman agreed with him, understanding that it was a good plan.
In 1956, the government in Azerbaijan made important changes to its Constitution. These changes officially stated two key things:
- Azerbaijani is the official state language of the Azerbaijan Republic.
- Smaller groups of people living in Azerbaijan have the right to develop their own cultures and use their own languages in their daily lives and government work.
Literary Career
Mirza Ibrahimov was also a very important figure in the world of Azerbaijani literature. From 1970 to 1986, he served as the Chairman of the Writers' Union of Azerbaijan. This organization supports writers and helps develop literature in the country.
Later Life
Mirza Ibrahimov passed away in 1993 in Baku.
