The Union of Azerbaijani Writers (called Azərbaycan Yazıçılar Birliyi in Azerbaijani) is a big group for writers, poets, and publicists in Azerbaijan. A publicist is someone who writes articles and essays, often about current events. This organization has more than 1500 members today. It was started on June 13, 1934. At that time, Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union.

The Story of Azerbaijani Writers

Before 1934, writers in Azerbaijan had different smaller groups. For example, in 1923, some writers formed a group called "İldırım." In 1925, another group named "Qızıl qələmlər" (which means Golden Pens) was created. This group brought many writers together and held regular meetings.

The Union of Azerbaijani Writers officially began on June 13, 1934. When it first started, it had 93 members. The Union also began publishing its own newspaper, called "Ədəbiyyat qəzeti" (Literature newspaper). The Union holds special meetings called congresses. Since 1934, there have been 11 congresses. These meetings usually happen every five years. The last one mentioned was in 2004.

How the Union is Organized

The Union of Azerbaijani Writers has offices in different parts of Azerbaijan. These include cities like Ganja, Lankaran, Mingachevir, Shaki, Sumgayit, Quba, and Qazakh. It also has offices in other countries. These are in Moscow (Russia), Borchali (Georgia), Derbent (Dagestan), and Istanbul (Turkey).

This organization is special because it includes writers from many different backgrounds. Its members write and publish in various languages. These languages include Azerbaijani, Russian, Lezgi, Talysh, and Tat.

The Union is run by a chairman, a secretary, and a board of directors. These people help manage all the activities of the Union. Currently, the chairman is Anar. He is the son of a famous writer named Rasul Reza. The first secretary of the Union is Chingiz Abdullayev.
