The Story of Azerbaijani Writers
Before 1934, writers in Azerbaijan had different smaller groups. For example, in 1923, some writers formed a group called "İldırım." In 1925, another group named "Qızıl qələmlər" (which means Golden Pens) was created. This group brought many writers together and held regular meetings.
The Union of Azerbaijani Writers officially began on June 13, 1934. When it first started, it had 93 members. The Union also began publishing its own newspaper, called "Ədəbiyyat qəzeti" (Literature newspaper). The Union holds special meetings called congresses. Since 1934, there have been 11 congresses. These meetings usually happen every five years. The last one mentioned was in 2004.
