History of the Writers' Union
Before 1934, writers in Azerbaijan were part of different smaller groups. For example, in 1923, some writers created a group called "İldırım." This group was for writers and poets. Later, in 1925, another group called "Qızıl qələmlər" (which means Golden Pens) was formed. This group brought many writers together. They often held events where writers could meet and share their work.
The Union of Azerbaijani Writers officially began on June 13, 1934. When it first started, it had 93 members. After the union was created, it also began publishing a newspaper called "Ədəbiyyat qəzeti" (which means "Literature Newspaper"). The union holds big meetings called congresses. So far, they have held 11 congresses. These meetings usually happen every 5 years.
