Mission 2110 is an exciting science fiction game show from the UK. It was made for children and stars Stuart Goldsmith and Lindsay Duncan. The show first aired on CBBC in the summer of 2010. A second series followed later that same year.

The story takes place in the year 2110. By this time, almost all humans have disappeared. Earth has been taken over by a huge army of robots called the Roboidz. Caleb, played by Stuart Goldsmith, is believed to be the last human alive. He needs help to fight back against the Roboidz. So, he brings in young people from 100 years in the past (our time!) to train them. These recruits face many challenges, both physical and mental. The best one is named the Ultimate Recruit.

The World of Mission 2110

In the year 2030, two scientists, Laura Gant and Simon Lansing, created the Roboidz. These robots were meant to help people on Earth and in space. But things went wrong. The Roboidz turned evil after a robot leader named Arkon started a rebellion. They came back to Earth to destroy all humans. In a big war in 2067, almost everyone was wiped out. Millions of human soldiers were defeated.

Caleb's Mission to Save Humanity

By 2110, Caleb believes he is the only human left. He is part human and part machine. He cannot remember anything about his past. Caleb is humanity's last hope. He recruits young people from 2010 to train them. His goal is to prepare them to fight the Roboidz and their leader, Neuros. The recruits will help him free the world from the robots.

As the show goes on, Caleb tries to learn about his own past. He also wants to know how the Roboidz started. He hopes to find other humans who might have survived the war. Caleb often talks to Cybele, an artificial intelligence (AI). Cybele knows some things about Caleb's past and the Roboidz. She often reminds Caleb to stay focused on his mission.

Secrets of the Past Revealed

It is later discovered that Cybele is actually the mind of Laura Gant. Laura was Caleb's mother and one of the creators of the Roboidz. It is also strongly suggested that Neuros, the Roboidz leader, is actually Laura's brain. This would mean Neuros is Caleb's true mother.

At the end of the first series, Caleb seemed to stop the Roboidz by defeating Arkon. However, a scene after the credits showed that Arkon survived. He then powered up the Roboidz again. In the second series finale, Caleb finally met Neuros. Caleb was angry when she suggested she was his mother. He smashed her, seemingly destroying her. But another post-credit scene hinted that she might still be alive.

How the Game Show Works

Every episode of Mission 2110 follows the same pattern. A group of recruits stays for three episodes. Over these episodes, the group gets smaller until only one person is left. All 16 recruits face the same challenges.

Day 1: Starting the Training

  • Four new recruits are introduced.
  • They take on four challenges. Two are individual tasks, and two are team tasks.
  • The goal is to earn as many "bio-rods" as possible. These are like points.

Day 2: Facing Tougher Tests

  • The four recruits face even harder challenges.
  • The last challenge of the day is called 'The Vaporiser', located in V-Lab.
  • The recruit with the most bio-rods is safe from this challenge.
  • The other three recruits take part. The loser is "vaporised," meaning they are removed from the game.
  • The remaining three recruits move on to the next day.

Day 3: The Final Challenge

  • The three remaining recruits face even tougher challenges.
  • Their bio-rod scores are reset to zero. This gives everyone an equal chance.
  • Only one recruit can move on to the final mission.
  • They face 'The Vaporiser' again. The first recruit to reach the center wins and moves forward.

The Ultimate Recruit Mission

Once four "elite recruits" have been found, they face four more difficult and different challenges. These all happen on one day. After the second and third challenges, two recruits are sent home. The last two recruits then face the final challenge in N-Lab. This challenge is called 'The Neuros Web'. The winner is crowned the Ultimate Recruit. The loser is "vaporised." The Ultimate Recruit is then sent home.

Meet the Characters

  • Caleb Lansing-Gant (Stuart Goldsmith) - He is part human, part machine. Caleb cannot remember anything from before the Roboidz took over. He wants to learn about his past and how the Roboidz came to be. Later, it's revealed he is the son of Laura Gant and Simon Lansing, who created the Roboidz. He became very ill at 17 and was frozen by his parents. When he woke up, he had no memory of his old life.
  • Cybele (Lindsay Duncan) - An AI who knows Caleb and his past. She is Caleb's only friend besides the recruits. In series 2, it's revealed Cybele is the AI version of Laura Gant, Caleb's mother, who died years ago from the same illness Caleb had.
  • Neuros (Lindsay Duncan) - This is the main computer system that controls all the Roboidz. She is actually a brain inside a container. In the series 2 finale, it's strongly suggested she is Laura's brain, making her Caleb's true mother.
  • Roboidz (voiced by Gareth Jones, Rich Garraghty & Noel Byrne) - These robots were first made by Laura Gant and Simon Lansing to help people. But after a rebellion, they destroyed Earth and got rid of humans. They were turned off at the end of series 1 but reactivated by their leader, Arkon. They come in different types, each with a different color and weapons:
    • Worker - Drone Class - These Roboidz are yellow with black stripes. They do all the simple jobs. They are very strong and have pincer claws that can destroy things. Luckily for the recruits, they are not very smart.
    • Wardroid - Battle Class - These are red and act as the police force. They have military training, a special rifle, and boxing-glove-like claws. Caleb says they are the most dangerous, but they are quite silly.
    • Guard - Commander Class - These Roboidz are silver. They cannot see, but they have advanced radar technology. They are the smartest Roboidz. They have strong multi-digit claws that are more powerful than steel.
  • Arkon (Peter Dickson) - He led all the Roboidz to Earth after the rebellion. He seemed to die at the end of series 1 but was shown to be alive. He then powered up all the Roboidz again, including himself and Neuros. Unlike other Roboidz, he had blue eyes, a blue color, and could speak.
  • Shades (voiced by Gareth Jones, Rich Garraghty & Noel Byrne) - These were once people. The Roboidz changed them into foul-smelling, non-human creatures. They were also powered down everywhere.
  • Recruits - These are the children brought to Future Gate to fight the Roboidz. After each episode, they are either sent home or "vaporised." Caleb and the other recruits don't know where they go.

Awards and Recognition

In August 2010, the camera crew for "Mission 2110" (series 1 and 2) was nominated for a Royal Television Society award. The crew included Pete Kelly, Allen McLaughlin, Hugh Creaney, Adrian Croome, and Adam Rogers. They were recognized for their excellent multi-camera work. The winners were announced in London on November 24, 2010, but the "Mission 2110" team did not win.
