When the mission was established, the area was home to the Suma Indians. They were the original inhabitants of that land. Over time, the number of Suma people living near the mission changed. For example, in 1750, there were about 155 Suma people counted. But by 1760, that number had gone down to 58. This shows how communities could change during those times.

Where Is It Now?

Over many years, the area where Mission San Lorenzo once stood became part of other towns. Eventually, it was included in a town called Ascarate.
