Exploring the Mississippi Delta

This area is often called "The Most Southern Place on Earth." This is because of its interesting history, different cultures, and how its economy grew. It's a place where many different stories and traditions come together.

How Big is the Delta?

The Mississippi Delta is quite large! It stretches about 200 miles long and 87 miles wide. This covers about 4,415,000 acres, which is roughly 7,000 square miles. This vast area is a floodplain, which means it's a flat piece of land next to a river that sometimes floods. The soil here is called alluvial, which means it's very rich and fertile. This rich soil comes from the rivers depositing mud and silt over many years.

A Rich Farming History

Before the American Civil War (1861–1865), the Mississippi Delta became one of the most important areas in the nation for growing cotton. The fertile land was perfect for this crop. Many farmers moved to the region to grow cotton. Sadly, the farming here relied heavily on the forced labor of enslaved people. Their hard work helped make the Delta a very wealthy agricultural area.
