John Mitchel McLaughlin (born 29 October 1945) is a former politician from Northern Ireland. He was a member of the Sinn Féin political party. From 2015 to 2016, he served as the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly. He was the first Speaker from a Nationalist background.
Mitchel McLaughlin was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). He represented the South Antrim area from 2007 to 2016. Before that, he was an MLA for Foyle from 1998 to 2003.

Early Life and Education
Mitchel McLaughlin was born on October 29, 1945. His birthplace was the Bogside area of Derry, which is in Northern Ireland. He went to school in Derry. He attended Long Tower Boys School and Christian Brothers Technical College.
Political Career
Mitchel McLaughlin began his political journey by serving on the Derry City Council. He represented the Northland area from 1993 to 1997. This was his first step into public service.
Member of the Legislative Assembly
In 1998, Mitchel McLaughlin was elected as an MLA for the Foyle area. An MLA is like a representative who helps make laws for Northern Ireland. He served in this role until 2003.
Later, in 2007, he moved to represent the South Antrim area. He was very popular there and received many votes. He continued to be an MLA for South Antrim until 2016.
Speaker of the Assembly
From 2015 to 2016, Mitchel McLaughlin held a very important job. He was the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly. The Speaker is like the referee in a debate. They make sure that meetings run smoothly and fairly. They also ensure everyone follows the rules.
Family Life
Mitchel McLaughlin is married to Mary-Lou McLaughlin. They have three sons together.
