The Mitchell House is a really old and important house located at 333 Main Street in Yarmouth, Maine. It was built around the year 1800. This house is a great example of a building style called Federal architecture, which was popular back then. It's also famous because it was the home of Dr. Ammi Mitchell. He was a big supporter of the North Yarmouth Academy in its early days. The Mitchell House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, which means it's officially recognized as a special historic place.

What the Mitchell House Looks Like
The Mitchell House is in the middle of Yarmouth village. You can find it on the north side of Main Street. It is a two-story house made of wood.
It has a special kind of roof called a hip roof. There are four brick chimneys on the ends of the house. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The house sits on a strong granite foundation.
The front of the house is divided into three parts. Tall, thin columns, called Doric pilasters, separate these parts. The side sections each have two windows. The main front door is in the middle section. It has windows on both sides and a round window above it.
History of the Mitchell House
The Mitchell House was built around 1800. It was built for Dr. Ammi Mitchell. He was born in 1762 and passed away in 1823. Dr. Mitchell was a very important person in the local community.
Dr. Ammi Mitchell's Life
Dr. Mitchell was a well-known doctor. He also helped make laws for the state. He gave the most money to help start the North Yarmouth Academy. He was also one of the first people to help manage the school. Dr. Mitchell passed away in 1824 when he was 62 years old.
Later Owners of the House
After Dr. Mitchell, another important person lived in the house. This was Dr. Eleazer Burbank. He was born in 1793 and died in 1867. Like Dr. Mitchell, Dr. Burbank was also a famous doctor. He also served in the state government.
