North Yarmouth Academy (also known as "NYA") is a special school in Yarmouth, Maine. It's a private school for both boys and girls. NYA helps students get ready for college.

The school was started way back in 1814. At that time, it was in a town called North Yarmouth. Later, the town of Yarmouth was formed, and the school is there now. NYA has about 394 students. Classes are small, with around 14 students each. This helps teachers give more attention to everyone. NYA also offers 16 different sports for students.

What Students Learn and Do

At NYA, students take five main classes each year. They can also choose extra classes called electives. Students must join a sports team or a theater group every season. This helps them stay active and creative.

NYA offers 16 special classes called Advanced Placement (AP) courses. These are like college-level classes. They can help students earn college credit early.

Sports and Arts at NYA

Students in grades 6-12 play team sports or do other approved activities. They do this three times a year. Many NYA graduates go on to play sports in college.

Music is also a big part of NYA. All middle school students and most upper school students join a music group. NYA has 12 different music groups to choose from.

Helping the Community

NYA students are very active in helping others. For example, in one school year, students spent over 4,500 hours helping out. They worked with more than 55 groups in the Greater Portland area. This shows how much NYA cares about giving back.

School Buildings and Growth

Over the years, NYA has built many new things. They added a science center in 2006. They also fixed up Russell Hall, one of the oldest buildings. It is now a foreign language center.

NYA also built an all-weather sports field. The Priscilla Savage Middle School was built in 2003. The school has also grown to include younger students. A Lower School for Pre-K to 4th grade opened in 2013. A program for toddlers (18 months old) started in 2014. The Lower School uses special teaching methods to help kids learn and be curious.
