Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mitchellville is a small, quiet place located in Harrison County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

You can find Mitchellville on the east side of US Route 69. It's about four miles south-southeast of a bigger town called Bethany. A stream called Big Creek flows right past the west side of the community.

A Look at Its Past

Mitchellville has an interesting history, including a name change! When the community first started, it was known by a different name: "Woodbine."

How Mitchellville Got Its Name

A post office was first set up in Woodbine in 1857. But a few years later, in 1865, the name of the community was officially changed to Mitchellville. The post office stayed open under this new name until 1888. The name "Mitchellville" was chosen to honor James Mitchell, who was an important early settler in the area.
