Mitsuhisa Taguchi (田口 光久, Taguchi Mitsuhisa, February 14, 1955 – November 12, 2019) was a famous Japanese footballer. He was a goalkeeper for the Japanese national team. He spent his whole career playing for the club Mitsubishi Motors.

Mitsuhisa Taguchi's Football Journey

Mitsuhisa Taguchi was born in Akita, Japan, on February 14, 1955. After finishing high school, he joined the football club Mitsubishi Motors in 1973.

Club Successes

In his first year, 1973, his club won two big championships: the Japan Soccer League and the Emperor's Cup. In 1975, Mitsuhisa Taguchi became the main goalkeeper for the Japanese national team. He took over from another great player, Kenzo Yokoyama.

The year 1978 was super successful for his club. They won the Japanese "treble," which means they won three major titles in one season! These were the Japan Soccer League, the JSL Cup, and the Emperor's Cup. His team also won the 1980 Emperor's Cup, the 1981 JSL Cup, and the 1982 Japan Soccer League.

Mitsuhisa Taguchi played 161 games in the league before he retired in 1984. He was chosen as one of the "Best Eleven" players eight times. This included seven years in a row, from 1977 to 1983.

Playing for Japan

Mitsuhisa Taguchi played his first game for the Japanese national team on September 8, 1975, against South Korea. By 1977, he was the regular goalkeeper for Japan. He played in important matches like the 1978 World Cup qualification and the 1978 Asian Games. He also played in the 1980 Summer Olympics qualification games.

From 1982, he became the captain of the national team. He led the team in the 1982 Asian Games and the 1984 Summer Olympics qualification. He played a total of 59 games for Japan before he retired in 1984.

Life After Playing

After he stopped playing football, Mitsuhisa Taguchi became a coach. He coached several high school teams, helping young players develop their skills. Some of the schools he coached at include Aomori Yamada High School [ja] and Kokusai Gakuin High School [ja].

Mitsuhisa Taguchi passed away on November 12, 2019, in Tokyo, at the age of 64.
