Mittagong railway station is a historic train station in the town of Mittagong, New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the Main South train line. This station is very old and important, so it is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This means it is protected for its special history and design.

Station History and Development

Railway Station - Mittagong
The station before the tracks were doubled

Mittagong station first opened its doors on 1 March 1867. It became a key spot for trains. This station is where the old part of the Main South Railway line from Picton joins. It also used to connect to a line that went to a "ghost town" called Joadja, which is now abandoned.

The main building on Platform 1 was built in 1873. The wooden building on Platform 2 was added later in 1919. This was when the train line was made wider with two tracks, which is called "duplication."

Train Platforms and Services

Mittagong station has two platforms, one on each side of the tracks. These platforms are where passengers wait for and get on trains.

Local Train Services

The station is used by NSW TrainLink for their Southern Highlands Line services. These trains travel between Campbelltown and Moss Vale. In the mornings, some trains go all the way to Sydney Central. In the evenings, some trains go to Goulburn.

Long-Distance Train Services

Mittagong is also a stop for Xplorer long-distance trains. These trains travel from Sydney to places like Canberra and Griffith. For most of these services, Mittagong is a "request stop." This means the train will only stop if passengers have booked tickets to get on or off there. However, on Thursdays and Sundays, the Sydney-bound Xplorer from Canberra or Griffith will always stop.

Station Buildings and Features

The Mittagong station complex has several interesting buildings. On Platform 1, there is a brick station building built in 1870. Also on Platform 1 are the former refreshment rooms, which were built in 1873. On Platform 2, there is a timber building with a sloped roof (called a skillion roof). This building was first built in 1867 and had additions in 1873 and 1915. Both platforms are made of brick.

The station also has one signal box, which is a small building where signals are controlled. This timber signal box was built in 1919. There is also a goods shed from 1915, which was used to store items being transported by train. A steel and timber footbridge, built in 1920, connects the two platforms, allowing people to cross safely over the tracks.

Why Mittagong Station is Important

Mittagong is a very important historical railway site. Its location right in the middle of the town makes it a key part of the community. The old refreshment room is especially interesting. It was only used for a short time. This was because the Governor of New South Wales preferred to get off the train at Moss Vale to go to his country home. He didn't want to wait at Mittagong while people had refreshments.

The station buildings, especially the very old one from 1867, are very significant. They show how railway stations were built a long time ago. Because of its history and special buildings, Mittagong railway station was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.
