About Mitte: Berlin's Central Borough
Mitte is a very important part of Berlin. It is known for its history and many famous buildings. People from all over the world come to visit Mitte.
How Mitte Was Formed
In 2001, Berlin's boroughs were reorganized. The old Mitte borough, which was in East Berlin, joined with two other boroughs. These were Wedding and Tiergarten. Wedding was once in the French sector, and Tiergarten was in the British sector. Both Wedding and Tiergarten used to be in West Berlin.
This merger created the new, larger Mitte borough. The new borough covers an area of about 39.47 km2 (15.2 sq mi). As of 2017, about 374,000 people live there.
Districts Within Mitte
The new Mitte borough is made up of several smaller areas called districts. These districts include Gesundbrunnen, Hansaviertel, Mitte (the original district), Moabit, Tiergarten, and Wedding. Each district has its own unique feel.
Leadership in Mitte
The borough of Mitte has a mayor who helps lead the area. The current mayor is Stephan von Dassel. He is a member of the Green Party. The mayor works to make Mitte a great place to live and visit.
