Mitzie Jacquelin Hunter, born on September 14, 1971, is a Canadian politician. She was a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Scarborough—Guildwood in Ontario from 2013 to 2023. An MPP is like a representative for a specific area in the provincial government.
Mitzie Hunter was part of the Ontario Liberal Party. She also served as a minister in the provincial government from 2014 to 2018. From 2022 to 2023, she was the deputy leader of her party. She left her role as an MPP on May 10, 2023. This was to run for mayor of Toronto in a special election, where she finished sixth. Today, she is the President and CEO of the Canadian Women's Foundation.

Early Life and Education
Mitzie Jacquelin Hunter was born in Jamaica on September 14, 1971. Her family moved to Canada in 1975. They settled in Scarborough, a part of Toronto.
Hunter studied at the University of Toronto. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there. Later, she received a Master of Business Administration from the Rotman School of Management.
Before becoming a politician, Mitzie Hunter held important leadership roles. She was the CEO of the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance. She also worked as the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for Toronto Community Housing. A CAO helps manage a large organization. She was also a Vice President at Goodwill Industries of Toronto.
Political Journey
Mitzie Hunter began her political career in 2013. She ran as the Liberal candidate in a special election. This election was held to find a new Member of Provincial Parliament for Scarborough—Guildwood. The previous MPP had resigned.
Hunter won this election, beating her opponent by 1,246 votes. She ran again in the 2014 provincial election. This time, she won by a larger margin of 7,610 votes.
Government Roles
In June 2014, Mitzie Hunter was given an important role in the government. She became an associate minister for the Ministry of Finance. Her job was to help with the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan.
On June 13, 2016, she was promoted to a senior position. She became the Minister of Education. This meant she was in charge of schools and learning across Ontario.
In January 2018, she took on a new role. She became the Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development. This role focused on colleges, universities, and job training.
Party Leadership and Mayoral Race
In August 2019, Mitzie Hunter announced she would run for leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. She finished fourth in the leadership election held in March 2020. She was re-elected as an MPP in the 2022 Ontario general election.
Hunter became the deputy leader of the Ontario Liberals in 2022. In March 2023, she decided to leave her seat as an MPP. She wanted to run for mayor in the 2023 Toronto mayoral by-election. She lost the election, placing sixth with 2.9% of the votes.
