Mitzie Jacquelin Hunter (born September 14, 1971) is a Canadian politician. She used to represent the area of Scarborough—Guildwood as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in Ontario. She was an MPP from 2013 to 2023. As a member of the Ontario Liberal Party, Mitzie Hunter was also a minister in the provincial government from 2014 to 2018. She was the deputy leader of her party from 2022 to 2023. In May 2023, she left her job as an MPP to run for mayor of Toronto. She is now the President and CEO of the Canadian Women's Foundation.

Mitzie Hunter's Early Life and Education
Mitzie Jacquelin Hunter was born in Jamaica on September 14, 1971. Her family moved to Canada in 1975 and settled in Scarborough. Mitzie went to the University of Toronto and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, she got a Master of Business Administration degree from the Rotman School of Management.
Before becoming a politician, Mitzie Hunter worked in leadership roles. She was the CEO of the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance. This group works to make Toronto a better place. She was also a top manager at Toronto Community Housing, which helps people find affordable homes. She also worked as a Vice President at Goodwill Industries of Toronto. Goodwill helps people find jobs and training.
Mitzie Hunter's Political Journey
Mitzie Hunter started her political career in 2013. She ran as the Liberal candidate in a special election called a by-election. This election was held because the previous MPP, Margarett Best, had resigned. Mitzie Hunter won this election.
She ran for election again in the 2014 and 2022 provincial elections. She won both times, continuing to represent Scarborough—Guildwood.
Becoming a Government Minister
In June 2014, Mitzie Hunter was given an important job in the government. She became an associate minister for the Ministry of Finance. This meant she helped manage money matters for the province. She was specifically in charge of the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan.
In June 2016, she was promoted to a senior role. She became the Minister of Education. As Minister of Education, she was responsible for schools and learning across Ontario.
In January 2018, she took on another important role. She became the Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development. In this job, she focused on colleges, universities, and job training programs.
Running for Party Leader and Mayor
In 2019, Mitzie Hunter decided to run for the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. This is called a leadership race, where party members choose their main leader. She finished fourth in this race in March 2020.
After being re-elected as an MPP in 2022, she became the deputy leader of the Ontario Liberals. In March 2023, Mitzie Hunter announced she would resign from her role as an MPP. She decided to run for mayor of Toronto in a special election held in 2023. She placed sixth in the mayoral election.
