Miya Tachibana (born December 12, 1974) is a famous Japanese athlete. She is known for her amazing skills in synchronised swimming. This sport combines swimming, dance, and gymnastics. Miya was born in Ōtsu, Shiga, Japan.

Miya started practicing synchronised swimming when she was in elementary school. She was very good at it! In 2011, she was honored by being added to the International Swimming Hall of Fame. This is a special place for the best swimmers in the world.

Miya's Olympic Medals

Miya Tachibana is a very successful Olympic athlete. She won five Olympic medals during her career. These medals came from the 1996 Atlanta Games, the 2000 Sydney Games, and the 2004 Athens Games.

  • At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, she won a bronze medal with her team.
  • In 2000, at the Sydney Olympics, Miya won two silver medals. One was for the duet event with her partner Miho Takeda. The other was with her team.
  • She continued her success at the 2004 Athens Olympics. There, she won two more silver medals. Again, one was for the duet with Miho Takeda, and the other was with her team.

World Championships Success

Miya Tachibana also won many medals at the World Aquatics Championships. These are big competitions for water sports. She earned eight medals in total at these championships.

Her most special win was a gold medal in the duet event. She won this with her partner Miho Takeda at the 2001 Fukuoka Championships in Japan. This was a huge moment because it was the first time a Japanese synchronised swimming team had won a gold medal at this tournament!

She also won several silver medals in duet and team events, and bronze medals in solo and team events at various World Championships.

Asian Games Achievements

Miya also showed her talent at the Asian Games. In 2002, at the Busan Asian Games, she won a gold medal in the duet event. This added another important win to her impressive collection.

Life After Competition

After the 2004 Athens Olympics, Miya Tachibana decided to retire from competing. But she didn't leave the sport completely! She became a coach, helping new swimmers.

She worked with Masayo Imura, who is known in Japan as "the mother of synchro." This shows how dedicated Miya was to her sport. In the summer of 2008, she coached for the Santa Clara Aquamaids in Santa Clara, California. Later, she coached at the Imura Synchro Club.

Miya's Personal Life

In February 2012, Miya Tachibana shared some happy news. She announced that she was going to marry someone who worked in an office in Osaka, Japan.
