The name Moarves has an interesting past. It comes from the word mozarabs. Long ago, in the Middle Ages, the town was called Moharabes. This name referred to the very first people who settled in the town. They were called Mozarabs.

A Journey Through Time

Moarves de Ojeda has a long history. In the 12th century, it was part of a special area called the Merindad menor de Monzon. This was like an old county division.

Later, when old ways of governing changed, Moarves de Ojeda became its own independent town. In 1842, a count showed there were 18 homes and 63 people living there. Eventually, the town joined with the bigger municipality of Olmos de Ojeda, which it is still part of today.

Moarves de Ojeda is famous for its old churches. They show off a special style of building called Romanesque.

The Church of St John the Baptist

The most important building is the Church of St John the Baptist. People also call it St John of Moarves. This church is a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture. This style was popular in Europe from about the 6th to the 13th century. It often features round arches, thick walls, and strong, simple designs.

The Church of St Peter

There is another old church in the town, called the Church of St Peter. This church has some beautiful Romanesque corbels. Corbels are special stone supports that stick out from a wall, often decorated with carvings.
