The first Moby Dick restaurant opened in Bethesda, Maryland in 1989. It was started by a man named Mike Daryoush. He came to the United States from Iran in 1975.

Mike Daryoush first opened a small sandwich shop in 1987. This was in Bethesda, Maryland. He served a few dishes from the Middle East. In 1990, he changed his menu. He started focusing on Persian food. He also added a special clay oven to cook the kabobs perfectly.
Why the Name "Moby Dick"?
The name "Moby Dick" has an interesting story. It refers to a very large and well-known kabob restaurant in Tehran, Iran. This restaurant was close to the American Embassy during the Shah's time. The owner of that original restaurant really liked the book Moby Dick. That's how the name came to be.
