The name "Moby Dick" comes from a famous kabob restaurant in Tehran, the capital of Iran. That original restaurant was near the American Embassy. It closed down after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The first Moby Dick House of Kabob in the U.S. opened in Bethesda, Maryland in 1989.
The Story of Moby Dick Kabob
The founder of Moby Dick House of Kabob was a man named Mike Daryoush. He moved to the United States from Iran in 1975.
In 1987, Mike Daryoush opened a small sandwich shop. It was in Bethesda, Maryland. His shop served a few dishes from the Middle East.
Two years later, in 1989, he changed his menu. He started focusing on Persian food. He also added a special clay oven to cook the kabobs.
The name "Moby Dick" was chosen because of the famous restaurant in Tehran. That restaurant was very popular for its kabobs. It was also near the American Embassy during the time of the Shah, who was the ruler of Iran before the revolution. The owner of the original Moby Dick restaurant in Tehran really liked the book Moby-Dick.
The Moby Dick House of Kabob chain has grown over the years. A new location opened in Baltimore in 2017. Mike Daryoush, the founder, passed away in 2019. This was just a week after the restaurant chain celebrated its 30th anniversary.
