Lake Burton, Moccasin Creek State Park

Moccasin Creek State Park is a cool place to visit in Georgia! It's a 32-acre park right on the edge of Lake Burton in Rabun County. This park is perfect for families and friends who love the outdoors. You can find places to camp; a special fishing spot for kids, older people, and those with disabilities; and fun walking trails. Even though there are big mountains all around, the camping area is nice and flat.

How Moccasin Creek Park Started

Moccasin Creek State Park is located inside the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest. It began in 1963 as a simple campground. A person named Fulton Lovell, who was in charge of the Georgia Game and Fish Commission, had the idea. This commission helps manage wildlife and fishing in Georgia.

The land for the park, which was 32 acres, cost $63,415. At first, the park was run by the nearby Lake Burton Fish Hatchery. A fish hatchery is a place where young fish, like trout, are raised before being released into lakes and rivers. The new camping area quickly became popular with people who loved boating and fishing.

Just three years later, in 1966, the campground was too busy for the Fish Hatchery staff to manage. So, it was given to the State Parks Department. It was renamed Moccasin Creek State Park. It is Georgia's smallest state park, but it's known as one of the best places in Georgia for camping, hiking, and fishing. In 1993, a building by the lake was named the Fulton Lovell Assembly Shelter to honor Fulton Lovell.

Where is the Park Located?

The park is on Georgia State Route 197, about 20 miles north of Clarkesville, Georgia. The Lake Burton Fish Hatchery is right next door. You can visit the hatchery to learn how trout are raised. The park also gives you easy access to the Chattahoochee National Forest and its cool features, like the famous Appalachian Trail.
