History of Moderate Women
Starting a Women's Group
In 1910, women in Sweden got the right to vote in local elections. Soon after, the first woman from the Moderate Party, Valfrid Palmgren, was elected to a local council. Because of this, the Moderate Party decided to create a group just for women within their party.
The very first women's group was called Stockholms Moderata Kvinnoförbund. This means 'Moderate Women's League of Stockholm'. It was started in 1912 by Lizinka Dyrssen, Louise Stenbock, and Cecilia Milow. Ebba von Eckerman was their leader.
This local group later became a national group in 1915. It was renamed Sveriges moderata kvinnoförbund (SMKF), which means 'Moderate Women's League of Sweden'.
Two Groups Become One
For a while, there were two separate women's groups. One was the Sveriges moderata kvinnoförbund (SMKF). The other was Högerns Centrala Kvinnoråd, which means 'The Central Women's Advisory Committee of the Right'. This second group started in 1920, led by Alexandra Skoglund.
These two groups worked side-by-side from 1920 to 1937. Then, in 1937, they decided to join together. They formed one single women's group. This new combined group later became known as the Moderate Women. Alexandra Skoglund, who had led Högerns Centrala Kvinnoråd, became the leader of the new united group.
