Moderato Wisintainer was a famous Brazilian football player. People often called him just Moderato. He was born on July 14, 1902, in Alegrete, Brazil, and passed away on January 31, 1986, in Pelotas.

Moderato played as a forward, usually on the right side of the field. He was part of the Brazil national football team that played in the very first 1930 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay. During the 1920s, he helped his club team, CR Flamengo, win the Campeonato Carioca (the Rio de Janeiro Championship) twice. He also played for state teams from Rio and Rio Grande do Sul.

Early Football Days

Moderato started playing football when he was young. He played for a team called Esporte Clube 14 de Julho and then for Guarani FC in his hometown.

In 1921, he moved to a new club called Palestra Itália. This club is now known as Cruzeiro EC. He played there until 1922.

Playing for Flamengo

In 1923, Moderato joined CR Flamengo, a big club in Rio de Janeiro. He played many games for Flamengo until 1930. He appeared in 147 matches and scored 27 goals for the team.

Moderato helped Flamengo win the Campeonato Carioca twice, in 1925 and 1927. In the final game of the 1927 championship, he scored the winning goal against America FC. Flamengo won that match 2–1. It was an amazing goal because Moderato had just had an appendix operation and was playing with a special brace to protect himself!

World Cup Hero

Moderato first played for the Brazil national football team on December 6, 1925. This was in a game against Paraguay, which Brazil won 5–2. He played three more games for Brazil in that tournament, where Brazil finished second.

In 1930, Moderato was chosen to play in the first-ever 1930 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay. Brazil lost their first game, but Moderato got to play in the second match against Bolivia. Brazil won that game 4–0, and Moderato scored two goals! This made him the second player ever to score for Brazil in a World Cup. The first was Preguinho. Even though Moderato scored, Brazil did not move on to the next round of the tournament.

Later Career and Life

After the World Cup, Moderato went back to his home state. He finished his football career in 1932 with his first club, Guarani FC in Alegrete. In 1931, Guarani FC came in second place in the Campeonato Gaúcho (the Rio Grande do Sul State Championship). They lost the final game 0–3 to Grêmio FBPA.

After he stopped playing football, Moderato became an engineer in Pelotas. He also worked as an official for a club called Clube Esportivo Bento Gonçalves. In his later years, he really enjoyed playing golf. Moderato passed away in January 1986 when he was 83 years old.
