João Coelho Neto, better known as Preguinho, was a famous Brazilian footballer. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on February 8, 1905. Preguinho played as a forward, which means his main job was to score goals for his team.
He was the son of a well-known Brazilian writer, Coelho Neto. Preguinho played for the Fluminense football club from 1925 to 1938. During his time with Fluminense, he scored an impressive 184 goals.
Playing for Brazil
Preguinho also played for the Brazil national team. He was part of the team that played in the very first 1930 FIFA World Cup. This big tournament was held in Uruguay.
First Captain and Goal Scorer
Preguinho made history at the 1930 World Cup. He was the first-ever captain of the Brazil national team. He also scored Brazil's very first goal in a FIFA World Cup match. This important goal happened in a game against Yugoslavia. He scored two more goals in another match against Bolivia.
Later Life and Legacy
Preguinho passed away on October 1, 1979, when he was 74 years old. To honor his amazing contributions to football, his club, Fluminense, dedicated a statue to him. His life story was even made into a TV program in Brazil.
