About the Moeraki River
The Moeraki River starts high up in the Southern Alps. These are tall mountains that run along the South Island. The river then flows west, making its way towards the coast.
Where Does It Flow?
As the Moeraki River gets closer to the sea, it turns to flow northwest. It eventually reaches the eastern side of a small lake called Lake Moeraki. The river then flows out of the western end of Lake Moeraki.
Journey to the Sea
After leaving Lake Moeraki, the river continues its journey. It travels a short distance before finally emptying into the Tasman Sea. The Tasman Sea is the large body of water between New Zealand and Australia. This meeting point is about 20 kilometers northeast of a town called Haast.
