Mohamed Abshir Muse (also known as Mahamed Abshir Haamaan) was an important Somali General. He was born on July 1, 1926, and passed away on October 25, 2017. He is best known for being the very first Commander of the Somali Police Force.
Early Life and Training
Mohamed Abshir Muse was born into a Somali family. When he was young, he received special training from the Carabinieri. This is a national police force in Italy that also acts like a military police.
Military and Police Work
Mohamed Abshir Muse worked hard and rose through the ranks. From 1958 to 1960, he became a leader in the Somali Defence forces.
After that, he decided to join the new Somali Police Force when it was first created. He led this police force for nine years. In 1969, before new elections, General Muse chose to leave his position because he did not agree with how the elections were being handled.
Later, a military leader named Siad Barre took control of the country. General Muse spoke out against this new government. Because of his strong opinions, he was put in jail by Siad Barre.
After his release, Mohamed Abshir Muse continued to be involved in politics. He became a leader of the political part of a group called the Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF). He passed away in 2017 when he was 91 years old.
