Mohammad Sarengat (born October 28, 1939 – died October 13, 2014) was a famous Indonesian athlete. He was a fantastic sprinter in track and field events. Sarengat made history by becoming the first Indonesian to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. He achieved this amazing feat in the 100-meter sprint at the 1962 Asian Games.
Early Life and Family
Mohammad Sarengat was born in Kedunguter, a place in Banyumas Regency. He spent some of his childhood growing up in Batang Regency. Later, his family settled in the city of Surabaya.
Sports were important in Sarengat's family. His uncle, Mursanyoto, was also an athlete. Mursanyoto played as a goalkeeper for the Indonesia national football team. This shows that athletic talent ran in their family!
Asian Games Success
Sarengat's biggest achievements came at the 1962 Asian Games, which were held in Jakarta, Indonesia. He won a gold medal in the 100-meter sprint. His winning time was an impressive 10.4 seconds. This victory was very special because it made him the first Indonesian athlete ever to win a gold medal at the Asian Games.
But he didn't stop there! Sarengat won a second gold medal at the same competition. He triumphed in the 110-meter hurdles event. He set a new Asian record with a time of 14.3 seconds. He also earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter sprint, showing his versatility.
Sarengat's Indonesian record for the 100-meter sprint (10.4 seconds) stood for a very long time. It was not broken for 22 years! Another Indonesian sprinter, Mohamed Purnomo, finally broke it at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
After the Asian Games
Since 1962, only two other Indonesian athletes have won gold medals in track and field at the Asian Games. They are Supriyati Sutono and Maria Natalia Londa.
After his success at the Asian Games, Sarengat continued to compete. He won a silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the 1963 GANEFO Games. He finished second to China's Gao Jiqiao in that race.
After he retired from sports, a football stadium was named in his honor. The Moh Sarengat Stadium is located in Batang Regency, which was one of his home areas.
Later Life and Legacy
After his incredible sports career, Mohammad Sarengat decided to study medicine. He became a physician. He even served as a doctor for Adam Malik, who was the Vice President of Indonesia.
Mohammad Sarengat passed away on October 13, 2014, in Jakarta. He was 73 years old. He is remembered as a national hero in Indonesian sports.
