Mohammed Hanif is a talented writer and journalist. He was born in November 1964. He is from both Pakistan and the United Kingdom. His stories and articles have appeared in famous newspapers and magazines. These include The New York Times and The New Yorker.

Mohammed Hanif used to work for BBC News in Karachi, Pakistan. He also wrote a movie about Karachi called The Long Night. He has written several books, like A Case of Exploding Mangoes and Our Lady of Alice Bhatti. He also wrote a play, The Dictator's Wife. This play was performed at the Hampstead Theatre.

About Mohammed Hanif

Mohammed Hanif was born in Okara, a city in Punjab. He first trained to be a pilot officer at the Pakistan Air Force Academy. However, he decided to become a journalist instead.

He started his journalism career writing for magazines like Newsline and newspapers like The Washington Post. He also studied at the University of East Anglia. In 1996, he moved to London to work for the BBC. He later became the head of the BBC's Urdu language service there. In 2008, he moved back to Pakistan.

His Books and Plays

Mohammed Hanif's first novel was A Case of Exploding Mangoes. It came out in 2008. This book was very popular. It was considered for the Guardian First Book Award and the Man Booker Prize. It won the Commonwealth Book Prize in 2009 for Best First Book. It also won the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize in 2008.

He has also written for movies and radio. He wrote the film The Long Night in 2002. He also wrote a BBC radio play called What Now, Now That We Are Dead?. His play The Dictator's Wife was staged in 2008.

His second novel, Our Lady of Alice Bhatti, was published in 2011. This book was also recognized for awards. It was shortlisted for the Wellcome Trust Book Prize in 2012. It was also a finalist for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature in 2013.

In 2018, he wrote another novel called Red Birds. He is also working with composer Mohammed Fairouz on an opera. The opera is titled Bhutto.

Award Returned for a Cause

Mohammed Hanif received an important award from Pakistan called the "Sitara-i-Imtiaz". This award is given for special achievements. However, on December 20, 2023, he returned his award. He did this to show his disagreement with how the government was treating the Baloch people. He also protested against police actions during a march in Islamabad.

Mohammed Hanif is married to the actress Nimra Bucha.
